Hello!
I have a problem with my Audi factori original keyless entry. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I have replaced all 4 battaries with new ones in key, but nothing changed. There is one strange thing I found occasionally - in dark room there is visible a weak red light from IR diode when button is pressed. Is this normal?

IR has sensors on the b-pillars outside of the car and uses a big (big) key with a button in the middle. RF has no visible sensors, and uses a separate key and remote.

The IR system is known to fail. I replaced my DS sensor on the 100CS since it finally quit working altogether. RF system on my '96 has worked great without any maintenance since I got the car.

I have tested form both side of the car and the result is same. Sometimes it needs to press the button for 20 times or more, before doors will close or open. But if I look at the IR LED in the dark room, everey time the button is pressed there is also weak red light inside the LED. So I must replace those sensors outside of the car? Is this very big work to do it itself?
I have already repalced myself that outside temperature display background bulb, so I'm now skilled ;-)

Chances are, if you have more than one key, they won't all be broken. Change the batteries on the other keys if you have any, and try those. Otherwise, replace the sensors. Mine was something in the $200 range for parts/labor. Would call GPR for parts. I had my shop install it so I'm not sure how hard it might be. Remove the b-pillar, for starters. Might be a simple job.

FWIW, the sensor died after the car was about 6 years old, but was showing signs of getting weak after 5 years. So yours are right on schedule!

<center><img src="http://my.tele2.ee./matikodu/thekey.jpg"></center><p>I have also made a little test with key and webcam. And the result was - IR transmiter is working perfectly. I compared the intensity of key to TV remote. IR light emitted by key was much stronger than emitted by TV remote.
Here is also picture, how the IR light looks like. ;-)

I gonna get brutul, I think, to open up the key fob or delicatly make an incision with a knife and split the rubber shell. Cost ?

Locksmith saw my car and key and asked for it for comparison to his blank key stock. He had the right blank key ready to grind down for $25. $25 high/low ?

From Audi, the keys are $58/each... no light, no remote. That's for the Porsche-type groove key

On my 96 A6, I have the two big keys (main one has a button that activates a tiny pen-light bulb on the key). I have two very thin radio-frequency remote fobs. This is the factory original system.

I have replaced the battery on my remote before. Got the battery at Radio Shack and replaced it myself - took about 2 minutes and cost about $3.

In fact, I was going to buy a switchblade remote/key and reprogram it for my car, but I was told that the newer switchblade remote keys aren't compatible with the older systems (pre-1998).
