Default Looking at buying a '94 100 Avant Quattro. How are the Auto trannies on these cars..

Over on the 90/80 forum... it's a well known rule that Auto transmissions in B3/B4 cars is to be avoided. The C4's Auto improved?

Default not-so-much...

trannies and ignition switches battle for weak spot 1 and 2. the original transmission in mine made it through 121K then lost overdrive... most don't seem to make it that far.

Default my 100CS shifts smoothly but it has has its problems...

I bought it from the original owner and he only serviced it Audi dealers. I have all the receipts. Two of the seals on the tranny were replaced at about 40K miles. Around 70K the tranny would stick in 2nd gear. This was fixed by flushing the tranny fluid out. I just replaced the right hand drive flange seal and the seal for the rear drive shaft. So after 120K miles, the tranny seals have been replaced twice. So my tranny has been well maintained and is still working fine.

Default Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've not had problems......

My '94 100S(138K) auto has been real good. I do 35-40K mile tranny fluid and filter changes and have had no problems. I've also driven several others with over 200K that supposedly had original trannys and they were good too. I think the big key is servicing them regularly. This seems to be on par with Volvos, BMWs, and Mercedes that we have owned. Most of them fall apart pretty quick without proper service. Old Volvos seem to be the best, you can really abuse them and not service them and they still make it to at least 200K.

Just my 2 cents....my tranny will probably blow up tomorrow!!

I have one with 152K on it. And no compains. As long as you service it.
