Default MAF screen purpose

What is the purpose of the screen mesh, whatever inside the MAF? What will happen if I take it out? I took my maf out to clean that screen, mesh thing. We live near a cement plant, and for some reason, that screen mesh gets ditry quite often, I change my air filter every 3000 miles to keep the air system clean, so can you leave that screen just out?
Thanks

Default hmmmm......do you have a leak in your intake?

I took my screen out on the advice of Austinado, but mine has always been very clean.

If you're getting debris trapped there then I'd look very carefully for a leak/break in your intake tubing, or maybe the filter housing isn't sealing like it should.

Gulping dirt like that is VERY hard on engines.

I am going to look to see if there are any leaks or something like that. Maby if I get the problem it would solve my trouble of when the car is at normal temp and I shut her off for >30 mins she has alot of trouble starting but morning start and <30 min start no problems, like nothing happened, but what is the purpose of that screen?

Default It's actually not a filter...

it is meant to smooth out airflow across the MAF wire for a more accurate reading. Removing it may trigger a CEL, but likely not. Removing it will actually increase performance, as it lets more air into the engine.

But removing the screen increases the potential for damage to the hot wire. ($$$)

Default Since the MAF is so restrictive taking out the screen makes it slightly more responsive but...

if you REALLY want more power you need to get your MAF machined by Mance on the 12V Forum.
It looks like this:

A side by side comparison:

Obviously I've done mine as many have, the best way to increase your power hands down in my opinion. I also enlarged my throttle body but the MAF was more dramatic. Mance says the MAF is the most restrictive part of the 12V engine intake hands down and it seems pretty true comparing the car's performance before and after.
What was said about possibly damaging your wire is certainly true but if you clean your MAF sensor every few months (very carefully with electronics cleaner) it shouldn't be a huge issue. Frankly that screen can't filter much, it just diffuses the air. Your air filter is supposed to do that job, change it often in dusty climates and you should be ok. Just my 2 cents.

It's best to install a velocity stack before removing the screen, to replace it's function.

How so? You've got a $30 air filter hanging out in front of it.
