Default Multifunction Switch???

I have a 1995 Audi A-6 Quattro. After bringing my car into the Audi dealer, I have been told that it is a multifunction switch that has gone bad. Is anyone familiar with this part? If so tell me more about it. Is it difficult to fix. They want over $500 to fix it. Is this out of line? How much does that part cost? Is it all labor or what is the deal with it?

Please let me know. Thank you all for your input and help.

Default Multi-function switch....

...is a pretty common failure. I take it your coolant gauge isn't working!?

Item #7 is the multi-function switch...
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/1889/v6sensors.jpg">

The part usually costs ~$40...(that's aftermarket probably; twice that from the dealer). I have heard that the part is buried and kind of hard to get at but that estimate seems a little too high to me.

Perhaps someone who's dealt with it on your car can offer more. HTH!!

What is the process that you have to go through to change this switch? Also do you knwo where I could find this switch to buy? I have searched but I cannot find one.

Any other information about this switch would be great.

The car is in limp home mode and thus the reason it is in the shop.

Default The multi-function switch...

...I indicated in my previous post is simply unplugged and unscrewed and then reversed. You will lose some coolant so this should be done when the car is cold and you should have some spare coolant around to refill.

You can purchase it here...

<A href="http://www.bimmerparts.com/">bimmerparts.com/</a>

It costs $40. The item you want is listed under "Body Electrcial". Then listed as the "Water Temperature Sensor"...it's listed as a 3-pin/4-pin sensor.

One thing to note. In my experience the multi-function switch will <b>NOT</b> cause the car to go into "limp home" mode.

Either;

a) your mechanic has diagnosed the wrong part OR

b) your mechanic is incorrectly refering to another sensor as the multi-function switch OR

c) this can cause "limp home" but I'm yet to see it.

You might want to check with your mechanic again before going further.

HTH and Good Luck!!

Default My switch does not work correctly but car runs fine.

My switch work intermintantly but causes not problem with performance. I just can't tell the temp on the cluster.

This would not cause the car to go into limp home mode. Verify with the mechanic or check with a non dealer mechanic that specializes in german cars.

I think the switch that we seem to be talking about here is two different things. The temperature gauge on the car was working fine as far as I could tell. I think that the multifuction switch that the mechanic is talking about is something different than what is being referenced to here.

The car is currently at a Audi dealership with highly trained and qualified mechanics. Maybe many of you have heard about them. The dealership is called Lujacks in Davenport, IA.

Default An Audi dealer with highly trained and qualified mechanics is an oxy-moron....

The info I'm giving you is for the multi-function switch. If your coolant guage works then your multi-function sensor is, at least partially, working fine.

Your dealer has either diagnosed the car wrong OR is refering to the item by the wrong name. I would think it's the latter.

P.S. I have heard of Lujack's, in fact, I live about 2 hrs away from it. They are a better Porsche dealer than an Audi dealer....but all dealers are ;-)

Default I think you are talking about the Multifunction switch for the auto tranny. This switch tells the...

tranny computer which gear you have selected with the gear selector lever. It is located in the center console(below the gear selector lever) OR on the transmission housing, connected with a cable to the selector lever. They are expensive and typically will fail with higher mileage cars. What are your symptoms??

This is exactly the problem that is happening. What happened was the car slipped into limp home mode and it would only stay in second gear. I knew it was in the limp home mode because I could put the car in reverse with no trouble. This is a automatic car so this all makes sense.

Do you have any idea how much this part would cost on the market? I am wondering how badly I am getting ripped off.

By the way, how is it that you know so much about the Audi's? You hit this right on the head.

Default Cost of switch

My car "limps home" when it slips into 1st gear.
I had the multifunctional switch changed (cost
Australian $395) but problem remains. Am still waiting for help, and will post here sometime when it is fixed. Oh, my car is an Audi100 2.8E
