I am wondering if my 1996 Audi A6 engine working to hard?
I have a 1992 Audi 100 non Quattro that cruises at 75-80 mph at 3000 rpm. I recently acquired a 1996 Audi A6 Quattro which cruises 60 mph at 3000 rpm. It almost feels like 4th gear is not there. Both are automatics. The Audi 100 has a sport button on the transmission lever console. The Audi A6 does not. Do I have a transmission problem in the A6?

I'd still like to see lower rpms at cruising speed (70mph), but I guess it's perfect for passing others from 70 to 90 range with the torque peak right there... guess you win some you lose some...
) Passing is so fun!
Another sort of related question...
Is it okay to have a heavy foot sometimes? Normally I drive pretty easy, leaving the tranny off sport mode, lazy shifts for the tranny and being a really slow red-lighter. But sometimes I just want to go for it and redline the car... it's got 210k, so is it a little too hard on the car?

80mph in the 100CS FWD is 3250RPM, while it's up at around 3400-3600RPM (I think... don't drive 80mph in the A6 much). For sure the quattro models run at higher RPM.
3rd gear will be near 4000RPM at 65mph... you'd really hear it.

Nice 92 Audi 100.Looks like mine. Why do you suppose they stop give drivers the sport button option, most of the tme easy drive works best.
