My rear shock broke! Woe is me!
Has anyone had a rear shock shaft actually break on them? That's wierd. In fact, that's just plain crazy talk. Anyone have a good rear shock and top mount just laying about? I'm going to buy a new set but I need a ghetto replacement until I get the cash to do the whole car.

The shaft broke? As in the metal broke, or as in the housing and shaft separated?
I've had shocks so worn out they were seperated from the housing (99 Ranger), but never see a shaft snap before.

Re:
Oh yeah. Somehow the top nut backed off just enough to vibrate in the mount long enough to wear an egg-shaped opening in it, and over time it finally just had enough play that the right bump came along and snapped the threaded portion off of the top. That rear bushing is hard to find I've found, since most of the ones on the sites state theirs as 'except quattro'. I hate when that happens.

Same here , on my Bilstein Sports no less, right under the nut. Passenger side rear. Replaced under
warrenty, luckily. This happen right after I lowered my car down off the lift. Took it for a test drive and noticed a loud clunking sound.

Yes I have had this happen to me too... The Fix is
The fix is to put grease on the Lower strut mounting bolt, while mounting the strut.
Or you can use Never Seeze
The problem is that the Steel Eye in lower strut bushing, will bind, and not move freely around the lower mounting bolt.
Go into a turn under acceleration and the top of the strut shaft snaps.
Or how about the OL' whip around a corner.
