Default Noisy Tappets after Heads Replaced

I was forced to replace blown cylinder head gaskets on my 1994 12v 2.8 a second time myself after a local workshop ripped me off bigtime and duffed the job. On completion the motor started immediately, but the tappets on both heads remained very loud for about 5-10 minutes, so I switched off and removed a cam cover to check. There was some oil around, but not as much as I would have expected. The oil pressure is high, top of gauge within seconds. The local non-franchise VW-Audi spares supplier tells me it can take hours before they quieten down? Can this be so? I did inspect the new gaskets, but now wonder if I could have missed a defect that is blocking an oil passage. Does anyone have any input on how long it should take before the tappets quieten down - or on faulty gaskets, or any other cause?

You won't get very many responses here... most of the knowledgeable posters went to QW when AW ruined their board and spit in the faces of their visitors.
