Default now that was stupid

the A6 I've been chatting about is my mom's but as she knows nothing about cars its my job to do the research/fix things and besides I'm the Audi buff so this gives me another model to mess around with.

anyways I just read through the bills from the previous owner, lets just say this car was a horror story at first and still has a few issues.

seems the guy paid 700 bucks to replace the water pump, timing belt etc but did not replace the 15 buck thermostat while they had the access.

the temp gauge does not budge past the first notch after 1/2 hour of driving and I really doubt its the 3 prong temp sender 3 that is acting up.
it does have heat though, just not a blast furnace.
nothing like tearing apart the front to replace something that should have been done in the first place.
make matters worse they never replaced the tensioner rollers as they "seemed" fine yet with 80+k or so miles its just a matter of time before they start making noise or worse seize up.
the ball bearings do not last forever like some shops seem to think.

guess word of advice is buy from somebody who is not a moron when it comes to Audi's or cars in general.

on another topic, how many of the 1W bulbs does it take to light up the shift console? every single bulb is blown and although I looked around it does not look as if the shift surround/center console comes out easily to get access to these bulbs.
only listing I see are for wedge push in type, these should be the ones but they are white, are the interior bulbs not orange?
autohaus might not have these, OE only.

sadly if this area had lemon laws for all the things that were wrong with it, she would have taken it back to the seller and acquired a refund.
As it is, rather stuck with it and fixing it up, its a nice car but needs to get up to speed.
least it does run smooth and the engine is quiet, that is a plus and there is no leakage, yet.

Default Don't think there are lemon laws anyhow for used cars...

...it never hurts to have an Audi mechanic who knows the model look it over before purchase.

ETKA show one bulb for the illumination by the shifter. N 017 751 2 - "W5 1.2W 12V"

Default got it

you mean 1 bulb variety, not 1 bulb total I'll take it?
unless that 1.2W bulb is mighty bright
I'll figure about 5 down the numbers, maybe more.
now the trick is how to get it in there.

as for lemon laws, some places actually do even on used cars if the seller made claims about its condition that later turn out to be false as in this case.
and yes, the car should have been looked over and sadly I was not around at the time to look at it myself or I would have fine toothed over it and found a long list of problems.

the bills are sparse too so its hard to know exactly what has been replaced and when.

it does have a new rebuilt low mileage tranny that apparently the dealer screwed up on somehow so they replaced it totally so that is good.

ETKA says there's 1 bulb total, it probably has a light diffuser similar to the instrument cluster..

Default geesh I guess so

must be one heck of a mirror to refract the light down the line.
the bulb is a massive 66 cents, finally something cheap!

Default that is what I am afraid of

no noise at all, engine is super quiet but the fact that no records exist on when the last time the roller and tensioner was changed and the fact that 5 months ago the timing belt and water pump was but that was it makes me leery.

15 bucks for a thermostat and about 50 for both rollers, if your going to pay for the labor least do the job right.

fact also this job was done at some backwood mechanic place, not an actual dealership or even a Audi/import specialist.

sucks but it looks like at this point the job is going to have to be refinished correctly with her footing the bill for it.

this part of the motor is not something you half-*** by any means.

and yes, I do remember that, its a worst case scenario when buying a used Audi.

Luckily the tension was kept on the belt from the water pump so no damage was done...

You can get a 2 pack of the bulbs at your FLAPS - Sylvania 2721 either 1.2W or 2.1W...

Default flaps?

I probably should know this one but I draw a blank.

going with the 2.1 should be the best bet, hey more light never hurts

brewing up a good order at AZ, at this point I can tack on the jahn for 56 cents since I am well over free shipping already.
otherwise for this I'd look local of course.
