The "check engine" light has repeatedly come on in my 1996 A6 wagon. The only thing that my mechanic said it could be was the O2 sensors and that it would cost over $700 to fix. I was wondering if anybody else has had a similiar problem.

Try check your engine codes to make sure

Replacing them is a pain, if I remember correctly mine cost about $120 a peice with the factory harness.
If you want to, you can get a generic sensor but you will have to cut the harness off the old one and splice them together.
Installation is not that bad, you just need a quality O2 socket and a breaker bar. Just remember to turn it the right way
(couterclockwise is loose, clockwise is tight).

....the genericsensor, Bosch 13913, is $69 ea., at GPR, and the OEM (with connectors), Bosch C5010-36503, is $100.34 ea., at AllOemAudiParts. The O2 sensor slotted socket is 7/8" at any parts store.
