Default Oil Leak

Help! Got a problem and not sure what to do about it. I got an oil change about two months ago and 10W-30 oil was put in. After a few weeks I got a low oil warning message on my dash and sure enough, I had low oil. I had also noticed a slight oil burning smell whenever I got out of my car before that. A friend of mine says that I should have used 20W-50 oil and the problem will go away. I haven't taken the car to my mechanic yet to check it out, but I'm hoping the next oil change will fix the problem. Any thoughts on this? Please let me know. Thanks.

Default If it is not secret, how many miles did you run for this 2 month?

It is normal to loose up to 1qt/1000miles.
I would not go with thicker oil, because it is not according to the manual. The thicker oil will make wider gaps everywere.

Default More info?

Where's the leak? How much oil was the car using before the "leak" started?

In cases, say with seals/gaskets that will leak, going to a thinner oil will promote the leak... 15W-40 has worked fine for me but I don't have any leaking gaskets. My cars go 3k without using any oil. Well, relatively speaking. Maybe 1/8" off the stick.

Default Audi's have a large capacity for fluids....

Large gas tank. Large wiper fluid resevoir. They also take large amounts of oil.

Is the suspected leak new? After your oil change did you verify that you started with the correct amount of oil? Is there any possibility that you were on the low side from the very start?

A lighter weight oil will leak faster, probably the head gaskets.
