Default Oil pressure gauge

Oilpressure reads around 5 bar when driving, between 2 - 3 bar when engine idling.
Some times it reads off scale (approx 6 bar ?) when driving and 3 - 4 bar when engine idling.
Could this be due to a malfunctioning pressure transmitter or gauge ??

Default In this case the oil pressure is directly related to flow (engine RPM) and viscosity (thickness/temp

As the RPMs increase oil pressure increases. As the temperature of the oil increases (warms up) the pressure decreases. In my pickup truck the oil pressure is about 60 PSI when cold at high idle. Once the oil warms up the pressure drops to about 25 PSI at idle and 45 PSI for normal running RPM.

Since the system is "fixed" resistance to flow is what creates the pressure. More resistance to flow creates higher pressures. It is harder (more resistance) to move cold (thick) oil than warm oil.

Moving larger volumes of oil (higher RPMs) creates more resistance to flow also so the pressure increases.

Default Re: Oil pressure gauge - Same problem for me too...!!!

Hi -
Recently i have purchased a 1991 AUDI 100. While i am driving, i am getting a beeping sound all the time saying "engine oil pressure too low" do not operate the vehicle. But the oil pressure reads around 5 bar when driving, between 2 - 3 bar when engine idling.

I have checked the engine oil level and its fine. Could this be due to a malfunctioning pressure transmitter or gauge? I am planning to go for a long trip...is it advisable? Can any one help me finding the quick solution?
Thanks in advance.
