Default Oil pump & oil pan gasket replacement with part numbers and other tid bits of info

Thought I'd make a seperate post just to give some brief details and offer up some part numbers.

As some of you have read, I had a leak from the top of the oil pump and had to replace the gasket. During tear down, I missed a 6mm bolt that went from the upper oil pan into the bottom of the oil pump and broke the upper pan. I had the pan TIG welded and surfaced, so that turned out okay.

When it came time to buy gaskets, there was a problem figuring out which gaskets my AFC engine took and I wound up getting the wrong gaskets for all 3 locations....lower pan, upper pan, and oil pump-to-block.

My car was built in 4/95 and the last 6 of the VIN are: 099292.

The correct pump gasket is Dealer only: 078-115-189F (That "F" makes all the difference! The "D" version will not work)

The correct upper pan gasket is: 078-103-609E

The correct lower pan gasket is: 078-103-609G

The correct front crank seal is: 034-115-147A

The correct water pump is: 078-121-004J

I actually drove to Royal Audi in San Francisco yesterday in order to buy the correct oil pump gasket, so I could finish the car today. Nice 430mi/7+hr drive for a $13 gasket.

Default Next time, try calling Criswell Audi in MD (1-800-280-3774), ask for Bob Dawson & have it..

shipped to you (tell him your an Audi Club NA member for a 15% discount). Or you could have had the a SF Bay Area dealer ship it to you via Greyhound Bus for same or next day delivery (or even FedEx). It would have certainly been cheaper than making a 350 - 400 mile roundtrip.

Default Thought about having it FedEx'd with Saturday delivery...

But then thought...watch some guy in the parts department drop the ball (as they always seem to do) and then the gasket is a no-show.

So, it was worth it to spend $40 in diesel and take a road trip in my Rabbit Pickup. Would have probably been $10-$15 to have it FedEx'd.

Plus, it sure feels good to have the car back together!
