Default To remove the valves you press.....

Down on the valve retainer while pressing up on the valve (put the head on a block of wood etc). The ring should go down revealing the keepers in in the center (small cone shaped items, 2 of them) remove them with a magnet or pliers etc. Now let the force off the retainer and the spring etc will lift off. The valve will now slide out the bottom without issue.

There are tools for pressing the valve spring down, but if the head is off various ways to do it on a bench are easy to rig up.

I made this up for my 4 bangers, may work on the V6 heads though I have not tried it. http://www.pureluckdesign.com/vw/vsc/index.htm

Default That's a good looking tool. I rented one from my FLAPS and used an

O2 sensor socket to extend it enough to work on a VR6 head I rebuilt awhile back.

Default thanks for the info, I borrowed a special jig from my vw work actually, and we used

a make shift socket with a cut out window. Worked pretty good, we got all the cones out. For the second head will be much easier with the jig and tool that goes with it. So far so good. Hopefuly all will be ready by sunday. The valves are ever so slightly out of shape, what a mess, all this cuz of a stupid belt. Well, know for next time, replace the belt anytime you get a car! Even if there's not belt, adjust the guides on a timing chain. Wish they could come up with some safety mechanism, this should be preventable in any case.
