* Auto mechanics - need to be a grease monkey AND a computer geek (surprise, surprise!)
* Welders/fitters - companies are paying premiums to get welders
* Machinists, especially NC types
And if the US starts building new nuclear power plants as currently being discussed/planned to address global warming, there will be a huge need for field engineers (most have retired, remaining will retire in next couple of years), ironworkers, millwrights, ASME Section III welders, electricians, etc. who work on the construction sites. Since a new nuclear plant hasn't been built in ~20 years, this area would be a fast track for anyone starting in it now, and would be lifelong employment.

there was a lull for a couple of years but recently there seems to be alot of positions available. I have noticed that many of the positions seem to be open for awhile which may mean the companies are having trouble finding qualified people and salaries offered are definitely increasing.
