Pads and rotors

My indy tells me my front pads are down to the sensor (sensor light is on) and need to be replaced. Also wants to replace rotors, says he always replaces rotors when putting on new pads to avoid any risk of pulsing or other problems with the new pads. This is my first brake job on my Audi but on other cars (volvos for example) rotors were not automatically replaced with new pads, only when the rotors were worn too much. Is my indy right?

with the rotors that is obvious to the naked eye and they aren't worn down to a thickness that in and of itself would call for replacement. It's just "always done". This is a highly recommended indy who does a lot of S-Audi's and I've been very pleased with him to this point but this strikes me as being a little too proactive in prevention.

tired of $200-$300 oil changes. The guy wasn't a crook or anything, just too meticulas for most people.

This is a repair shop that is getting you to do more work than necessary...to help HIM avoid problems in the future with come backs. He's spending your money on things not required so that all is perfect.
Rotors should be replaced when they reach the minimum thicknes or are warped or scored. I don't know if the Audi rotors can be turned/refinished. If they are not warped or pulsing with the current pads, then new pads shouldn't do this either.
Good luck,
Jon
