After my dad passed away my mom gave me his 1994 100 (C4) 2.8. I have the following problems though:
Unfortunately in South Africa it's quite difficult to get the little "computer tester" hooked to the car. Mostly only by dealerships, and then a charge of $100-$200 is charged. What can possibly cause this and can I fix this myself.
- The car is underpowered.
- The car jerks while accelerating. Usually in the 2000-300-rpm range.
- The cruise control does not switch on.

Start with the basics: air filter, also check the screen inside the MAF. Those like to break and cause problems. Change the fuel filter, it's right there by the airbox. Pull the fuel pump fuse while the car Is running first and make sure you get the crush washers back on properly. Change the spark plugs, make sure you use copper ones and not platinum. Mine hated the platnuims. If you can get one take an HEI spark tester and test the spark at each plug. An HEI won't show spark if its below 25,000 volts. If a tune up doesn't fix it, it could be something like a coil pack or a bad MAF. A quick way to test the maf is just unplug it and go on a test drive. If the problem is better that's your problem. I have a 92 100 with over 350,000 miles I'm pretty familiar with what can go wrong with this engine.

browlke, thanks! The MAF seems to be the problem. Unplugged it tonight and got a kick in the back (would have been a slap behind the head if my dad was still around!). Would I need to replace the MAF or can I try clean her first?

Also cruise control never works on audis. I've had 6 audis and it's only ever worked on 1. On my 92 100 it's broke and been fixed about 3 times. Just a fact of life on the older ones is just to give up on the cruise control.
