Default Power steering rack - is it worth replacing?

I'm starting to compile a list of things that need done/I'd like done to my car in order to improve it's general appearance and standing.

One of the things I was pointed out last christmas was the fact that my power steering rack was leaking, and would need to be replaced.

I don't know much about the steering components of these cars, but after being told the diagnosis, it seems the only problem with the rack itself is the fact that it simply leaks.

I put about one can of Audi fluid in there every few months or so... So yeah, it's a bit pricey, but because it's such a slow leak, i'm not sure if it'll be worth the cost of replacing the whole rack.

Are there any other problems down the road that can develop from this problem? Or, is adding fluid every now and then as bad as it's going to get?

Thanks.

Default If you ever forget to fill the fluid you run the risk of seizing the pump.

That's the story on my 92 I picked up for $350. Jorganauto.com just rebuilt mine for $275. Getting it out of the car is hell.

Default They rebuilt your entire rack for $275?

The audi dealer estimate in Pittsburgh was like 2000.

I've found rebuilt racks online from autopartswarehouse.com for 400, and one for 900.

Why the massive difference?<ul><li><a href="http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/products/products.php?year=1996&amp;make_text=audi&amp;mode l_text=a6_quattro&amp;category=steering&amp;subcat egory=steering_rack">http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/products/products.php?year=1996&amp

Default Not sure why the difference in price.

|skolnick on the urS forum recommended them to me so if it breaks in a few thousand miles I'll just blame him. :P

Default Once you understand what the real promlem is with these

racks, you can rebuild what goes bad for like 50 cents in parts and about an 30 minutes of labor. You can even do it yourself. The hard part is taking it out and putting it back into the car.

Bmthorn,

I have a different question? I was looking at the pictre of your 94/92 Audi. How did you replace the existing headlamps with the newer 95-97 model lamps? I thought the wiring was different. I have a 93 100CS and would love to replace my headlamps also. Thanks

Default They're from a urS4 (92-94)

The wiring is different, but you can get the correct harness from a B4 90 or an S4. EDIGREG has done the same thing to his car.

95-98 A6 lights won't fit right.
