Default Premium vs. Mid-grade

Since I have owned this A6 I have been burning premium. Yesterday I gave some Chevron 89 octane a try before our roadtrip of 300 miles and noticed no drivability problems whatsoever. Does anyone else burn mid-grade or is this a bad fuel for these cars?

Default I run what is recomended. Last couple tanks I've ran

Shell's V Power, 91 octane. It's too soon to tell but it seems I am getting an increase of 1-2 mpg.

You may be able to run the mid-grade a few times with out incedent. It may be in the long run that you start to see fuel system issues.

Default Should always use the minimum octane specified for your car. A lower octane can cause knocking...

(even with the knock sensors trying to retard timing) that eventually cause damage to the pistons/rings. As dr.greenthumb says, a couple of tanks won't hurt, but using lower-than-spec octane in the long run could cause you big problems => big $$s.
