After searching through the boards here I never found good instructions - but here is what worked for me with the thin 2 button RF fob on a '96 A6.

1. Turn ignition key to on position so dash lights are on
2. Lock driver door from outside with extra key
3. Hold both buttons on remote down simultaneously for about 5 seconds until corner lights flash - doors are still locked
4. Unlock door with key, open door, close door
5. Lock doors with remote
6. The red triangle flasher on dash will be blinking quickly
7. Wait about a minute until triangle flasher is blinking slowly, then remote will unlock doors
