After reading so many messages about beaking automatic transmission. I recognized, that I have one and because it is my first car with AT, I do not really know how to take care about it. I had changed trans. oil at 80K. So please tell me what should I do and what should I avoid to keep my transmission for long time. Also what is life expectancy of the 96 A6 auto trans. Thank.

even though they are an audi dealer, I hope they are using OEM parts and fluid, cause the Audi ATF fluid is around 12.00 a quart, (I believe the trans uses like 6 quarts)and the filter is about 30.00, labor should run around 1 1/2 hrs total, either they really like you, or they are losing money...
I wish there was a dealer in MN like that!!!

Hi together,
hereīs a new guy answering from the motherland of our babes ;-).
My 95 S6 is equipped with AT. Usually these boxes are undestrucable.
What you should do is to change ATF about every 60 kMiles. Thatīs what Audi suggests here in Germany. But considering your speed limits ;-) the ATF might be changed after a longer distance.
Also you should avoid stressing your transmission before it reached itīs operating temp (but I think this is a matter of course...).
Another thing: be sure that your car has stopped befor moving the stick form "D" to "R" or from "R" to "D". Also you should shift from neutral to "D" or "R" while your engine is idling. Otherwise the transmission or the drive train might be seriously demaged.
If you keep these things in mind your AT should last for a lifetime!
Keep on rolling,
Matt
