RE: Can the T-stat be replaced without removing the Timing Belt? Thermostat cover doesn't come off
I don't think you have to. I did the thermostat as part of the timing belt and water pump each time. Bentley says the following, and after looking at the drawings it appears you dont have to remove the timing belt. It may be a little tight in there though.
Thermostat, replacing
- Remove ribbed belt Repair Group 13
- Drain coolant into suitable container if it is to be reused.
- Remove thermostat housing from under toothed belt cover.
- Lift out housing.
Installation position of thermostat. The vent valve must be installed facing up (arrow).
Starts to open at approx. 87 C (189 F)
Fully open at approx. 102 C (216 F)
Stroke: minimum 8.0 mm (5/16 in.)

RE:Thats wat I see. But damn t-stat cover wont come out.
you did remove the serpentine belt tensioner assembly didn't you? I did it several times because i kept getting bad t-stats. moral to story get a good one! it comes out easier than it goes back in so be prepared to jiggle a bit on the back side.
