Default rear brake caliper has torn rubber sleave. How long will it work?

I found the rubber sleave around piston is torn on one of the rear brakes. How long can I use it before rust sets in? Anything I can do short of replacing caliper?

The second question: Does anybody has rear brake caliper (driver side) for 96 QA6 for sale? Used, but in good shape is Ok. Low milage cars are preferable.

Default rebuild it. The kits are pretty cheap. You'll just start sucking in air if you don't.

Yes rebuild it, but no you won't start sucking air. That's dust boot. There are seals inside.

True. But I've never seen a seal hold very long with the boot torn.

I have a used caliper but the parking brake is frozen. I'd pass.

maybe because abrasive dust will damage the seal?

Default ^^^^^ couldn't agree more. A rebuild is the cheapest way out. You could try and get more use out of

it... But a word of caution!!!!! You may end up seizing the caliper.I'll give you a couple of examples. When I was about 17, my brake pads statred squeaking. Didn't take care of it so i f_-_ed up the rotor. I figured, the rotor's already screwed, so I'll drive it some more. (thinking now instead of just pads I know I need a rotor too) Well the rotor got good and worn and one day, I stepped on the brakes and the rotor snapped. The caliper fell and dragged. Now, in the first stagees, all I needed was pads. Didn't take care of it, so I then needed rotors. Didn't take care of it so I then needed a caliper too. Get my point??? If something goes wrong with your car, it depends on the componet, wether or not it should be fixed immediately. If that part will not effect anything else. By all means, beat it in to the ground sideways. If not you could be asking for more problems and more $$$$ down the road. Your talking brakes, so.... eventually the caliper will seize cause uneven rotor and pad wear etc... Do yourself a favor and nip it @ the bud. Start with looking @ a rebuid. (Kits are cheap) if not an option look for a used caliper, and so on. But don't negect it!!!! MY other example is a chick I knocked up. But I'll save that story fo another day. An ounce of prevention is truly more valuable than a pound of cure.
