Default rear brake calipers .....

so I had my back brakes (95 A6 Quat) apart today and aside from not having a big enough C clamp the only real question I have (well there are two) number one the piston in the caliper does it go in and out or does it turn (I have to get this back in order for the new pads to fit on properly, right?)and second is there anything I ought to know that I am missing ? It seemed way to easy to pull them apart and out them back together!!!!! Thx in advance all-J

Default

You will need to turn clockwise and push to get the piston to retract.

Default As 4Driver4 says, you rotate and push inward to compress the piston...

There is a special VAG tool that is used for teh rear calipers. But in a pinch, you can use a pair of large pliers to grip and rotate the piston, and then push inward. If you use pliers, just be carefull that you don't pinch the boot or scratch the piston surface.

Default I think the large plier option is a very bad idea.

I scores up the piston and raises the potential for the piston to damage the boot.

Default I highly reccomend you...

open the bleeder screw with a small hose on it and force the brake fluid out the bleeder instead of back through the brake lines. Pushing old fluid with potentially rust and other junk in it back through the ABS pump can damage or shorten it's life. And them bastards aren't cheap/fun.

Default 2nd. However, you can buy a 3/8" key at your local auto parts store...

that allows you to spin the piston while applying pressure. The one got has 4 sides for use with different calipers...it required a little modification via grinder but works nicely for $5.

Default works great if you like busted knuckles

<center><img src="http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/photos/40700-40799/40732.gif"></center><p>My pistons must have been welded in place when I tried that crappy cube...
holding the caliper and a wrench and trying to keep the cube in place SUCKS..

I picked up the caliper tool set from harbor freight.. best $30 you'll spend this week

Default It worked well for me...

It was actually REALLY easy. Just hooked up the ratchet and a 3-way C-clamp (E-clamp?) applying downward pressure. Alternated twisting one then the other. Only force needed was for spinning each. No blood drawn ;]

I'm sure the proper tool is easier to use, but if you're in a squeeze those work fine.
