I own a '98 A6Q Avant (C4 chassis) with a cracked rear inner tail light lens. I have a new lens to install but getting access through the hatch seems a little tricky (don't have the Bentley - yet). I removed 4 small (black) screws around the edges of the inside panel but it doesn't budge. It's not clear if the cloth panel also needs to be removed. Rather than go pry around the edges and risk breaking something, I'd like some expert advice. My local mechanic said I need to remove all the trim on the inner hatch to get to the nuts holding the light lens assembly. I'd just like to know where the snaps are holding the panel to the hatch.

I apoligize if this has been covered many times before on this forum.

but DO NOT PRY the large lower panel. There are a couple a hidden screws. If you break the plastic, your hatch will rattle forever.
You definitely need to look at a Bentley.

I discovered that I could access the nuts thru the inner cloth panel (the rounded edge is the free edge). I never could remove the inner trim as described in the Bentley. I even went to a wrecking yard trying to look at the rear of one of these a trims, but could only locate a newer A4, which is not quite the same). I broke one of the connectors at its base in the attempts. But once I found this access panel, I completed the removal and installation of the new inner tail light. It worked for me, so you should be able to do the same.
