Hi
Some old story, reverse light only works sometimes and same with the mirror tilting (yes i have the button pushed in). I did a seach of the archives but could not find any "success stories".
Question1: Is the reverse switch on the transmission easily accessible if I jack up the car?
Q2: I see that several of you had a mech replace it for ~$300. What was the price of the switch vs labor and was the labor just to replace the switch or to do some diagnostic work first.
I'm trying to get a read on how hard it is to replace the switch.
I suspect I could check the switch and see if it is corroded and it could just use a cleaning but looking a Miktips picture of the tranny on the ground it is hard to see if you can easily get to it.
Also, any other places to check first that could be the cause?
Thanks.
Jim

You did not specify auto or manual tranny. I did my automatic and was challenging but not difficult as the job involved removing a tranny mount and cat exahusts to get to the switch. I'd say about 4~6 hours to do.
I'd recommend joinging the alldatadiy.com site and for $25/yr you get access to just about all the data found on the Bentley manual, including diagnosis flowcharts. According to that site, the switch is located on the right side of the transmission and gives the following data
Back-Up switch 012919823A $80.80 (no info on labor costs)
Jose.

Wires going to the reverse light was chaffing in the trunk lid area. Open trunk, check out the wires near the left side near the hinge of the trunk lid. See if any wear or cuts have occurred on the tube that houses about 10 wires. I manually spliced and reconnected about 6 of them. Another way to test whether these bundle of wires is giving you problems is to use your key to see if it can activate the alarm at the trunk lock. Sometimes, if the wires are cut, this feature will not work either.
