Default Rough Idle post Timing Belt! Please help!

I just had my timing belt changed last week and since I picked it up Friday night it seems that the idle is rough. Okay, it didnt idle like a new Lexus before, but not as bad as now.

I did a few checks for obvious things like vacuum hoses, plugs/wires, coil resistance, injector resistance and the o2 sensors were both replaced about 2K miles ago. The ISV resistance is o.k. too and theres no CEL. Alot of the things that lead to rough idle have recently been addressed as maintenence including cleaning the ISV and EGR passages. The idle doesnt "hunt" or fluctuate, its stable at about 700-750 rpm's and increases slightly when the AC is on(actually makes idle a bit worse). I have VAG-COM but have'nt yet hooked up to look at any measuring blocks.

My question at this point is...Is it possible that one of the cam-gears could be a tooth off? Would the car even be driveable if this were the case?

My car otherwise has good power and drives o.k. with no knocks or ticks or anything. Additionally, when I hold the rpm's steady at 1100 or so I still feel vibration, the shop actually commented on the idle post-op and said it may need motor mounts, but I did'nt realize to what degree their idea of "rough" was until I drove it home.

I knew I should have done the belt myself but I'm just short on time these days and yes I did do a little searching before my post but alot of what I fould I think I've covered...again short on time.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Could be a tooth off. Did they use the tools to do the job?

Default If the tools were used correctly, it is impossible for the belt to be off.

However, few people use the tools correctly.

Default can you ask them if they have the tools w/o them getting defensive?

If it was idling correctly before they changed the t.belt and now it doesn't, then it would seem most likely that something during that work wasn't done properly.

Default Keep in mind that because the camshafts are not keyed, not only could it be a tooth off, but...

It could be half a tooth off, 1.5 teeth off, a quarter of a tooth off, etc.

Exactly..."tooth off" more of "figure-of-speech". I agree with your thought. Thanks.

Default Agreed! Returned my car today, they seemed to take it O.K.

Did'nt ask about the tools, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now...we'll see what happens. THANKS!

Default Oh Rookies strike again!

Don't be a fool! Use the right tool!
If they don't know anything about Audi special timing belt tools, bring it somewhere else now!

PS: If I seem emotional about this its because old scars are starting to ache.
