Steering Column Lock

Steering Column Lock
I've had problems on and off for a while where I can't get my key to turn in the ignition. It's like the steering column locks for no reason. Usually after 15 or 20 mins of putting the key in and out and turning, it works, but today I can't get my acr to start. The manual says to gently turn the wheel and the key should turn, but this doesnt work. Anyone have and suggestions?

It's a 92, 100s.....
The main problem here is that I am trying to get rid of the car. When I was going to leave before, I was bringing the car to the dealer to see how much they would give me for a trade. I need to get the car started and down there ASAP or I can't get a new car. Also as I said before, I have had problems like this before, but after 15-20 mins of trying, it would finally start. I really just need a quick fix, dont want to put any more money into this thing.

Disable the mechanism
it wouldn't be difficult to disable the locking mechanism. Of course, if you're that deep into the dash it might be just as easy to replace the ignition switch.

the cyl itself is self contained. Just like the lock in the front door to your house.
No way you could do damage. Audi lock cyls', unlike ford or GM, cant be dissasembled to pull pins out, thus changing a key code. As a matter of fact the entire unit looks like an L. This is why it is in the dash and not the column. If your that worried, you have 3 other choices.
1. Spend a couple of Hundred and have your car rekeyed w/ new locks.
2. Try and run your keys over a buffer and see if they fit better
3. Leave it running when you go to trade it in. (Why be worried about fu%^ing a car dealer? The do it all the time.
The reason I asked you about the keys. Is because maybe they were cut slightly wrong. 3 spare keys cut wrong, will still be wrong. I asked if you were using the original key that came from the factory w/ the car.
In any event, your best bet is to put some type of lubricant in the cyl. If your scared of WD-40 then try powdered graphite.
Good luck
