i'm trying to remove my steering rack from my 95 A6 quattro and so far i'm having major headaches....not to mention the heat outside...
anyway, Bentley sais
"Remove mounting bolts for universal joint on steering gear pinion and steering column. "
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/92966/universal_joint.jpg">
those bolts aren't regular bolts and they don't screw or unscrew ...at least i can't figure them out....how the hell do i disconnect that?
last night i saw an add on audifans.com about 2 steering racks for sale and in the picture they were both in one piece..
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/92966/racks.jpg">..can't they be disconnected somehow because i'm never gonna be able to take the rack out with that bar atached to it....no way!
so what do i do ?
thank you so much.....i'm freaking out!

On the diagram (Page 48-4)there is a pinch bolt (21). Maybe if you remove that the rack can be pulled away from the steering column.

the PS hoses were not tight at all, i mean i could unbolt them with my fingers so they were leaking badly....i got them tight, connected the tie rods, plenum and started the engine, turned the weels both to max for quite a while.....i have power steering and i can't see any leaks...i only have half of reservoir of pentosyn but i'll get more tomorow....anyway no noise from the PS pump, and the level stays the same in the reservoir.....again i checked for leeks and there are none....i'd try driving it but i have no breaks....if it was to leak wouldn't have leaked already by turning the wheels on the spot?
so ...what would you do ?
replace the rack after all or leave it alone?
it doesn't leak.....any other ways i can check it?
thanks!

The test you did is exactly how the workshop manual describes it. I would top up the fluid and drive it. Initally check the fluid level once a day until you're satisfied that there is no leak.
