Default Switchblade Remote for 98 Wagon

My 98 A6q 2.8 Wagon came with a single key. Nice. I'm almost certain they come with standard keyless entry (it has the alarm that beeps when I lock it from the outside, and I can't lock it from the inside when the door is open, so not having keyless entry would be ludicrous).

Anyway, I've gotten mixed messages of whether or not I can purchase a switchblade key, and which key I should purchase. Any input would be massively welcome. I've searched around on the list and not found a definite answer (perhaps it belongs in the faq! also, the faq should be a heck of a lot easier to find...)

Thanks!
Peter

p.s. - This is a C4 A6 wagon, the C5 came out in 98 only in the sedan, to my knowledge.

Default I use a different Key Fob (the Newer style)

I use the switch blade style key fob on my 97 A6qw. The middle button (trunk) does not do any thing but the other buttons work just fine.

But the fob that came with your key was most likely this:

Default Actually 4driver4, you're incorrect.

That is a RF remote for an earlier ('95-'96) model car, then in '97 it changed to a IR system, similiar to the earlier 100CS system. Then, in '98, they went back to RF, but the frequency is different from the earlier models.

I'm confused, how can a remote be IR? Doesn't that require line of sight?

Default Partially correct

Original remote on a '97 was a square RF remote. RF switchblade works fine with '97's.

Hmmm. So the switchblade will work with 97 and 98?
