Default time to bring in the brass monkey

that's an old saying having to do with freezing off certain appendages on an ornamental monkey, but on to my questino:

it's cold and my temp gauge is way down off the left side. maybe pointing at my left shoe if there was no stop. i replaced the multi-temp sender this summer and i don't ever remember it reading that low. anyhow, there has been a couple posts talking about temperaturs in degrees. my gauge only has some marks. after sitting overnight, it gets warm enough to blow heat after driving for a few miles, but i wonder if it is not getting up to temp. where should the needle be? and will it hurt to drive it with too low a temp?

Default It is odd how each auto acts different with the gauge low. With my thermostat stuck open

the oil and coolant temp wouldn't climb but I never had a problem getting heat in the winter. The auto system would always get down to three on the coldest of days. Go figure? In warm weather I've been running on the first thin line. In dead winter I run at the end of the triple bold bars. Ignore those arrows, I linked the image from www.sjmautotechnik.com - thanks!

Default do you have VAG-COM tool? If you do, try this! Just connect to Engine and then to HVAC controller...

one of them will have this code (I forgot which one)

1 DTCs Found:
16500 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Implausible Signal
92-00 - Unknown Error Elaboration

clear the code.

now start the car. Does your gauge behave differently now?

Mine suddenly started to work.

Default Re: time to bring in the brass monkey

I had the same issue with mine - temp needle barely moved, although the car still had heat. I replaced the thermostat, and now the car will really bake you out. Temp needle now goes to the normal (second arrow on the pic in marcogyver's post) mark, and it's been cold. (-22) the other day, -12 out there now). Takes a few miles, but it get there.

Before the t-stat was replaced, I also noticed the exhaust was really stinky. That seems to have gone away with the car getting to the proper temp.

Default The real brass monkey

Just to set the record straight, the monkey mentioned isn't a lawn ornament. It's a device made of brass used to hold cannon ***** in a pyramid shape on the deck of a sailing ship. When it got very cold the "monkey" would shrink and the ***** would roll off and around the deck.

Freeze the ***** off a brass monkey.

Default don't have vag com tool

there's been some posts here about reading the codes on the climate control, but i must be too dumb to figure how to do it. besides, my display is pretty funky. heater works, but reading the temp is pretty hard because of the orange blob.

as for the thermostat being bad, that will realy **** me off if it is. in august, i just changed my timing belt, and everything else, including water pump and thermostat.

Default you're right re: cannon *****. back in the 1800's we .......

had to make sure the cannon ***** didn't roll off the ship. i shouldn't given all that information. the young girls on this forum might think i'm a old man.
