it's not the thermostat. It's the temperature sensor.
You just need to spend $70 for the vagtool. Go to www.obdtool.com. You can use the shareware version of VAGCOM software (comes with obdtool) to get these codes.
I know you can read those via the climate control, but that's not the way.

for a while, the temp gauge wasn't working at all, so i replaced the sensor too, (about $50). my thinking is the sensor may be off a bit. i mentioned it being off the low side when cold.
if i look at the total swing of the needle, it probably is the same as it used to be, just that the start and stop of the needle are rotated left some.
