Tires & Rims

I'm getting close to needing a set of four tires on my '96 A6Q. I saw the BFGoodrich/GTech offer, and it's tempting. However, I think the novelty would wear off pretty quickly. I'm looking at another option, and would like others' opinions.
I was thinking of buying a set of 16" (17"?) rims/tires from someone with a new A4/S4/A6 etc. Then I can put a set of snow tires on my current 15" rims.
A local service manager told me to be careful that the overall tire height not change. So I'm wondering what rim/tire combinations I should be considering, or whether this is a completely silly idea.

Diameter: 16", 17", 18"
Width: 7", 7.5", 8", 8.5"
The 8" and 8.5" width will start to extend past the fender lip... see example here with these 18x8.5" rims, and remember this is on a car with extended fenders to begin with.

To calculate tire sizes, check the link below... stock size to compare to is 195/65/15... 215/55/16 or 225/50/16 are good, as well as 225/45/17.

Tire Size Calculator
