Default Transmission problem 96 A6?

What can cause the trannie to shift 3 gears and not going to 4th or OD?
Do I need a new trannie?

Thanks,

Default SOUNDS LIKE a solenoid in the transmission, but effectively, probably a rebuild or replacement -

assuming that i'm reading correctly and that you DO have 1st and 2nd gears as well as 3rd, and not just 3rd gear alone - that would be a different (limp home) game entirely.

Note that your '96 A6 doesn't have an OD, only 4-sp w/ an electronic differential lock (EDL).

Default 3rd gear is 1.00 to 1, the 4th gear is 0.68 to 1.

Anything less than 1.00 to 1 is OD even if they don't call it OD only D.

True, but Itooz_a6_a8 was saying "...4th or OD", implying a gear beyond 4th.
