Default Transmission Woes...

I dread that I'm on my way to failure..any input is appreciated.

My 95 A6 is at 133k miles. Just today, I came out of the grocery store and started up. I noticed and odd noise, almost sounded like a fan failing or struggling. I went into reverse and hung up for a second with a mild gear grinding noise. I threw it back in park and shut off the car immediately. Waited a minute, then started and went into rev. with no problems.

When I got home, I stopped, went into park, and I could feel the drive disengage, but the the gear grinding noise came again. I shut off, waited a couple minutes. Restarted and had no problems.

It doesn't feel or sound like the horrible gear grinding I've experienced in other cars when transmission failure is eminent, so I'm hoping it's not that.

Transmission on a quattro is the final frontier for me...meaning it's unexplored. I do know just from previous posts that tran fluid monitoring and replacement is a little beyond checking a dipstick, but I am fairly well versed in things mechanical. So do I tinker myself or go to my Audi guy?

TIA for any help.

p.s.- no MIL or error codes yet on it.

Default I'd first check your flid level, if you haven't recently.

Beyond that there isn't a lot to do with the transmission, unless it's computer-related.
