Default VAG tool

i wondering is it expensive tool to buy and have it for myself to diagnose my car problems instead of going to dealership and paying lots of money for that.
i have seen couple sites offering software for PC and cables. like this:
http://www.priemus.nl/Manual2081/vag-com-faq.html

Is it same as having VAG tool itself? anyone has reliable source for that?

thanx

Default your best bet is to ask on VAG-COM forum.

I personally have one and like it. In my case it helped me to read and clean error codes on at least 10 occasions. So it is worth it for me. But if you need it just once - you might ask people around. Somebody, who has it, will help you out. I helped some people couple of times.

The VAG 1551/1552 tool runs ~$1,500. VAG-COM starts at $199, but you'll need a laptop to use it.

Default If your '93 is the same as my '96, it is located in the center console, next to the brake handle...

(under a plastic cover that has an engine symbol w/ a lightning bolt on it).

no, it's a four-wire, two assembly connector, in the main fuse box under plenum in engine compart.
