Default warm up

Ok manual said that you should not idle warm up engine, but do not run with hight RPMs and open trutle until it is warm. The new M5 shows red line of the engine depending on the oil temp. On the cold engine it is 4000 and then it going up to the 7000 or so. So I thought I should do the same: until oil temp is below first tick - do not push engine above 3000 RPM. Then do not push it above 4500 until oil temp reaches midle between first and second tick.

Does it sound Ok? What is your way to warm up engine?
Also manual said, that you should idle for 2 min. before shutting it down. Do you follow this recomendation?

Thanks.

Default What I normally do

Durring the winter I let the car warm up, I know the manual says not to.. but I have a remote starter and I like to have my seat heaters on, and the heat nice and warm by the time I get in my car.

If its not that cold, I am pretty easy on the throttle till it warms up. In general I don't go above 4500rpm, but when its cold I try more around 4000.

If I have been driving awhile, like 45min+ I let the car run for 5min or so, but I am able to remotely stop it so I can leave it running and locked at work, and turn it off from my office.

Warm-up and gentle driving <3000RPM is always a good idea, until oil temp comes up to >180F

Default Re: warm up

Funny you should mention that. Until the oil temp moves past the first tick, I try and baby the car. However, the way the xmission is programmed it forces me, in cold weather, to keep the transmission over 3,000. I would change this if I could.

Can I change the transmission programming?

Default You can pull the battery post and reset the program. Then drive like a Wuss. It's worth a shot.

Don't forget the radio code will need to be entered.

I've noticed my shifting geting more aggressive as time goes on.

Default You don't even need to reset the ECU... it will re-learn if you change your driving habits.

If you maintain steady throttle from a stop, it will start to hold first gear until 20-30mph, depending on hot much throttle you give it.
