Default Water pump issues - quick response appreciated

I had some noise coming from where I thought the water pump was (from behind the top pulley on the serpentine belt), so I ordered it along with the belt from Autohaus. I've got a 97 Audi A6 Quattro Avant. The part looks like what's sold everywhere else. But where is the water pump located exactly? And if it's not behind that top pulley, what WOULD be making a clicking noise from that location?
All help would be appreciated as I'm sitting here trying to figure this out and only have a few hours before I have to be at work.
Thanks

Default The water pump can only be changed by removing the timing belt so....

you should do the whole service, t-belt, pump, serp belt and the rest. Is it leaking? If not it could be something else. What's the history? It should have been changed around 90k so maybe you have some time left before it's needed. If it's original then do it soon!

Ok - I poked around and figured out where the water pump is and the job looks to be more than can be handled today. Any ideas on what would be making a clicking sound in that general area? Could I disconnect the serpentine belt and start the engine for a few seconds to determine if the noise is coming from something other than the water pump?
Also, how can I acquire the two special tools (#3243 & #3243) to do the timing?

Default If it is coming from the top pulley of the serp belt

then it's your power steering pump, not the water pump. You can run the engine without the serp belt to see if the clicking stops, just not too long as you will be sans alternator. One more thing, when you put the belt back on, make sure it is in the same direction as it was when you removed it.

Default Removed serp belt & sound was still there...

so it looks to be isolated at the water pump. Would this be a conclusive list of parts for repair: water pump, timing belt, t-belt tensioner, t-belt idler pulley, thermostat, serp belt? Also - how do I get the special tools - only from the dealer? (I don't see anything like this on Autohaus).
Thanks everyone for your help - Orlando, the diagrams are really helpful.

Default If you want

you could go to Blauparts.com and get a ready-made kit. You can also rent the tools through them when you purchase their kit. I used the kit on my A6 and it's been fine after a year. Just so you know, they give you Meyle (read crap)brand parts so you take your chances. Unfortunately, I only have the cam locking bar. I can't find my crankshaft holding tool though, otherwise I could lend the tools out.

Timing Belt Kit

Default I'd lend you my crank tool. They're easy to fab from the right sized bolt, too.

you'll want to get cam seals and a crank seal as long as you're in there.

a number of us have posted parts lists for our timing belt jobs.

Hmm, what size bolt? That's a great idea.
