Default what engine to look for when buying

an Audi A6 Avant (the C4 one)? Preferably 1995, but 1994 would do. Which engine is the best? I'm planning on spending ~3-3,5k euros on it and it is really a choice of 2.6 or 2.8 petrol engines. I'm also looking for a manual, because on my annual road trips to the mountains of some sort, an automatic, i believe, would not be that much fun. So, I'm eagerly waiting for some Audi experts to lurk along and answer my question Thank you very much

Default the C4 A6 is already "under powered"

so I'd go with the biggest engine you can find... the 2.8

but thats just my 2cents!

Don't forget, torque wins races, horsepower sells cars. I'd take a TDI any day of the week.

Default want strictly petrol, and it is not for racing :)

i can't take diesel for many reasons... only the petrol engines will do. And I also heard the 2.8 engine is not very reliable? maybe then the 2.6 is better? power out of the question. 150AG would do, just want to make sure if i'm not missing out on something (the 2.8 engine, that is)

the 2.8 with a manual and quattro would be best.

Default reliability

i believe so, but is this engine as reliable as, for instance, a 2.3?

Default when you're looking at cars this old it all comes down to maintenance and care

even if one of these engines had data to suggest it was more reliable than another, it would be junk if it had been driven hard, run low on oil, overheated, or otherwise abused.

If you're looking for your "dream car" then you'll be well served to obtain maintenance histories on your potential choices and find one that's been driven by responsible adults.

Default 99% of the people on this forum only have experience with the 2.8 engine. I have

never owned a 2.8 but from my observations of experiences with this motor in a B5 (A4), B3 (80/90), or C4 (100/A6) you'll get well over 150,000 miles before having to anything considered to be engine work on this engine if it has been properly maintained by previous owners. Just my opinion.
