Why me!?!?!??!?!?!?
Here's a little time line 'O engine rebuild problems:
Pay $400. for complete NG engine, let it sit @ the junkyard for 1 1/2 years, finaly get it to my Dads garage and pull the head, #4 cylinder is rusted to ****! AND the head is not compatible with my F.I.
I sell the head for $75. :-)
I pull another head for $35. @ pick ur part.
I take the block and head to the machine shop, they clean and hone the block($120.), rust is so bad it will need to be bored out and have new pistons ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)
NO WAY!!!!
OK, I find a rock'n NF engine w/88,000mi on it @ pick ur part for $120. :-)
I give the "old" NF head to my Dad and bring the "new" engine to the machine shop.
I get a call today: "the back cam bearing is no good, it's scored real bad along with the cam, you need to get another head"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
F*CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now I have to bail on my Dad and take back the "Old" NF head and hope the cam bearings are OK, otherwise I'll have to pul my 3RD head!!!!!!
That's it dude! I'm buying a f*cking Eclipse and ricing it up, I give in to the "dark side" I can't take it anymore!!!!
Oh yeah, did I mention I was running out of money?????????

I bought my beloved turbo eclipse awd back in 1991 new for $17000. had it 8 years and put 282000 (!) miles on it. never did anything to it other than syn. oil changes & tuneups. oh, i lied. replaced the TPS several times and added Greddy exhaust. ran it occassionally on track days. fun, fast, reliable. so it was a ricer. but it was reliable, faster than any audi i've driven (including my current one)lately, and more or less bullet proof. now i have 2 audis and wonder... ;-p

My friends all own DSM's, and they have been less reliable than either of my Audi's. But yes, they have been modded to the brim. Ive helped with I dunno how many transmission drops to replace "broken" and weak ones, with ones that actually work. It always seems something is wrong with my friends' 90 TSI. I do understand that chasing down tiny problems is common with cars with lots of aftermarket gadgets though.
I dont mind his car, its turbo, and awd, plus its very fast![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

And tell them it's not a rocket ship. You can save that bearing surface by cutting a few thou off the cap where it meets the head. Polish the "bearing" surface up nicely with some crocus cloth and call it an afternoon.
Or, if you want to turn it into a rocket ship, heli-arc the surfaces and line bore to match.
Or, find a nice looking cap off another head.....
You get my picture I think. That big long cam's not going anywhere, those bearing surfaces are nice and large, and all you want it to do is hold oil pressure at that journal better than it might now. Gouges and other imperfections are just nice pockets for extra oil to hang out in. Right?

Dan, relax man. You're talking foolishness when you mention an Eclipse!!! Remember, the chances of finding a pristine block/head combo are very slim, unless you are able to hook up with a fellow Audi dude. I suggest trying to acquire another cam cap and, as austinado suggests, a little creativity by a machinist filling in the scores, you should be OK. I suspect you are committed financially to complete this swap and I also suspect you have been at it quite awhile. What are another few months? Take your time and don't loose sight man. Things will work out.

I feel your pain. I can't beleive you're having so much trouble with donor engines. I won't even tell you how easy it was for me.
That Eclipse talk is nonsense though. My good friend, who is a very competent mechanic/car builder/race driver owned two of them. They were the biggest piles of crap he ever owned (and he's a GM guy!). It was a race to see what would blow up first, the engine or the gearbox.
At least that won't be an issue for you when you finally get this thing together.
Hang in there. After a couple months and a few beers this will make a great story to tell at parties.
