In my 84 4000q shifting into second gear seems to grind a little, mainly when the car is warmed up. The trans fluid is full and the clutch seems ok. Is this common on higher mi. cars, and should I be worried?

...I had the same problem with my 4kq and sometimes in my 5kqt. As I understand it its no big deal. It will fail eventually but I drove my 4kq 5yrs and almost 80,000 miles with no problems. Try this when you go from first to second let the revs come down slightly then slowly put it into second. If it goes in with no grinding then its a weak syncro.

If you haven't already, you might want to try changing the gear oil. Make sure you refil with the proper type. That may help the syncro ring bite a little better on the synconizer hub.
Otherwise, as suggested, try to come up with a way that you can get a clean shift. That crunch is actually crashing the 2nd gear engagement teeth and will eventually chip them. Then, it will pop out of 2nd when you stand on it.

My car does that when we get the arctic cold here in WI. By the way...anyone in SE WI an audi freak?...Anyhoo, when you "depress" the clucth to shift from 1st to 2nd, tap the gas pedal...just slightly, as you make the transition. Also, I reccoment converting the fluid to a high quality fully synthetic like Mobil 1. I've owned 3 4000's and every one has done it.
