I am interested in buying an 85-87 4000kq as a daily driver/project car. What can I expect in maintenance and upkeep. From reading the forums I have a pretty good idea on some basic performance upgrades, but was hoping for some insight into what else I can expect in ownership. Also, what is typical mpg. Thank you for your help

It depends on how well the vehicle has been maintained over its 20 year life. Some cars sold still have maintinence records, so its good to have those. My car had ALOT of issues when I got it, but it was cheap (700 bucks), had a strong engine and trans, just needed some work and love, which ALL cars 20 years old need.
If you have a decent sized pocketbook, will NOT get aggravated with doing the work yourself, and are willing to put forth the effort, the car is well worth it.
Plan on a complete master tune-up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filters, maybe a timing belt and water pump change too. If you DIY, it can cost around 300 to get the parts, maybe more, its been a while since I bought my tuneup parts. We are here to help ya though, remember that.
The 4kq is an awesome piece of Audi's history, IMHO. Very rugged and durable AWD system, timeless styling, superb seats (sport seats), interesting technological ideas that were way ahead of its time in the 80's (trip computer, quattro defrost, CIS in general).
If you want anymore info, just ask, there are alot of great people on this forum.

That's a neat few lines. I originally bought an Audi because my Dad bought one in Germany when I was 12. I even took my first road test in my parents '86 5000s. Audi is an awesome place in my history as well.

My experience (and I've owned my 84 4KQ since new) is that there is a pretty standard list of items that wear out or are likely to break, none of which are catastrophic. Blauparts.com has a checklist of things to look for. A key thing is whether the prior owners kept a maintenance log. FYI my car has 250k miles, is on the original clutch, never had the head off so expect the basic drivetrain to be as close to bullet proof as it gets. Wear out items are in the suspension, electrical bits (switches, relays, connectors), Radiators and vacuum plumbing. Most of this is stuff a "shade tree mechanic" can fix on their own.

Blau's Used Audi Checklist

i bought my 4kcsq for real cheap figgering if it made it thru on year, then i got my money's worth. given the fact that after 252000 miles, its on original clutch and everything else, i can only say wow. there is a cat in these forums who retired a similiar car with 375000 miles. these thing were built to last. ine is so full of rust, it should have died but nope. not even close. as my signature states, it just keeps getting prettier and prettier. especially with the help of all the gang in these forums. they are a vunderbar group of people and most, i hope to meet for coffee and "shop talk" one day
