Just purchased an 87 4000s. The gas gauge worked for a while then tonight when i was on the road it read empty. Was wondering if there was a low fuel light or if this is a common problem and how to fix.. Thanks

Its either the fuel sending unit in the tank, the gauge, or wiring somewhere.
Ive never tested either of them. I tossed in a used fuel gauge and it worked fine. The sending unit may also be a problem, its directly on top of the tank when you pop the trunk and move the lining away.

Go in the trunk lift the carpet, and you'll see a round door where the fuel sending unit is below. Unplug the connector and measure the resistence of the pins of the sending unit in the tank, to be reading empty they would have to be an open, which suggests to me it's wiring somewhere. Or it could be the voltage stabilizer in the instrument cluster.
