Default My idea

Maybe; maybe not.
I had a problem with quirky steering and a clunking also. After a frustrating amount of time trying to figure it out, I finally found the lower ball joint was not tight where it bolts into the control arm. The BJ itself was fine; the whole unit was not tight where the two nuts hold it onto the arm. It would shift back and forth depending on the pressure applied to it. It's difficult to check as it won't appear to move when you screw with it yourself. Just give those nuts a tweak and see if they are truly tight.

Default 2nd, Also..

Jack your car up on both sides. Turn your wheel to full Left lock and look at the top of your srping purch. I had a similar problem with my car and I found out I bent my spring. The spring was slipping back and forth off the purch. If it looks ok try doing it to the fight full lock. I also forgot to tighten a ball joint once and had a similar problem so I will second Dwight V. Good luck.

Default subframe bushings?

I'm holding my subframe bushings suspect in regards to front suspension clunking noises...won't know for sure until I change them out though.
Anyone ever tried changing the subframe bushings in order to correct the offense?
