Is 800 bucks good for a new clutch kit for a 86 4000csq? At least thats what my new car mechanic quoted. Better than the 1200 bucks the Audi dealership quoted. The mechanic says I clutch kit, new throwout bearings, but no slave cylinder. This isnt probally something I can do my self

The kit from PMC includes the disc, pressure plate and TO bearing I think for around 150? I forget the price. The local german shop here quoted me 3 hours for doing that work. Their rate is 50 bucks an hour, so in theory, I could have labor done for 150, then add on the 150 for the kit and you get around 300, possibly adding on 50 bucks for something I forgot.
But really, you can get a much better price on a kit, even from Blau, but go with PMC, I think they still have their free shipping thingie goin on.

If something were to happen, even if they installed it wrong/bent pressure plate, etc., they WILL charge you to take it apart again and fix. Its like bringing your own steak to a steak house.
I worked at a shop, and the general consensus was, if you brought your own parts, or diagnosed the problem yourself and told us what to fix, you could very easily go away dissapointed.
I might mention to the guy that you know the parts should be around $225 (leaving room for him to make a little money on parts), and call the dealer to see how much the book shows for labor.
But, when you start bargaining, mechanics really don't like it. Just check around for the best price with someone that knows these cars.

Do you have a FWD car? I know in a 4000csq you have to remove both the engine, and the tranny to work on the clutch. Something about the AWD and a "transversely mounted engine" makes the doing the clutch on a quattro hard. My mechanic quoted me about 7 hours.

Thats what the shop quoted me.
They asked me first off what kind of car, and they are knowledgable about them, so I didnt think anything of it. Ive helped with numerous other AWD tranny drops, but the engine was mounted transverse, as opposed to our longitudinal.
Even if it turned out to be 5 hours for my car, Id still do it, its a good price. (that is, when you supply the parts).

Jeez louise. The clutch kit only costs about $200, slave cylinder probably $40, bearing...$30. Call German Parts and Restoration (GPR) and they will hook you up.
If you want to know the truth, a local european repair place near me quoted $850 to do the job, including parts. 7 hours labor time...

And is a full Q tranny swap possible to do on jack stands?
I was considering it, but it will be quite a task I think. The bell housing looks big enough that it could be a headache to try on stands.
Thanks
