Well, heck! It has been years now, but I KNOW they were different....
....I had an '84 and I bought a soiler from an '87 and it 100% would not work.
I recall there being something different in the key hole.
I also recal something differerent about the "legs" that come down the back side of the trunk lid and that was a deal breaker for me.
Sorry I can be any more help than that. Year have passed at this point.

If there's any difference between them I can not spot it on my cars...
They look the same to me, right down to the key holes people keep saying are in different spots.

Measure the angle of the trunk lid, the '84 has a much larger angle and...
The '84 one is ever so slightly shorter, '84 trunk lid tapers in a bit more than the newer cars.
