Default 85 Audi 4000s rough/ idle

ok here's the deal. Sometimes after letting of the gas the idle will drop down below 900 rpms to about 2-300 rpms and ocassionaily stall, but if it doesn't stall there the rpms bounce back up to about 800 then down to about 4-500 and then back up too 900. Does anyone have a clue what is wrong? any help would be greatly appreciated

Default Check the ISV valve.

I had the same problem, turns out my ISV valve was sticking. The ISV (Idle Stablizaton Valve) is located right next to the throttle body. It looks like a small metal canister, with an eletrical plug into it. Clean the sucker out with eletrical parts cleaner, and move the valve around with a toothpick. Otherwise it could be alot of other issues.

You can also move it by energizing it briefly with 12v

Default Disconnect the ISV...

It's junk. I went through 2 of the suckers, and got fed up. You can unplug it, then adjust the idle speed to your liking. The rpm's will drop when the a/c kicks on, but no big deal.

anothing to possibly look at is the idle control valve vacuum hose (3/4 inch diameter rubber hose that connects to the intake and various other places) mine was all kinds of torn up and it's a huge bitch to replace. the guy that had it before me just mummified it in electrical tape.

Default Heh...mine would suck itself flat...

Whenever I would let off the gas the weird ISV elbow hose would flatten itself. I took it off, stuffed a stainless spring in there...no more problem. Still didn't idle worth a damn though.

yeah, I just spliced a piece of radiator hose to it, slathered it with "sensor-safe" high temp silicone (some of the tear was impossible to cut off) and clamped the ****er... a real frankenstein job but hey it works and it idles like a champ
