I've had a weepy head gasket for a while now. it just makes the block dirty no drips. usually oil will push out before water due to the higher pressure (say 80 PSI vs 12 PSI) so look for oil in the coolant. What I'd do is clean the engine to see if you get a read on the source, look for foaming on the dip stick or junk in the antifreeze and spot check the plugs for differences in color. On the engine rebuild question, how many miles do you have and did it consume any oil prior? If its young, replace the gaskets and you should be fine. Otherwise, check compression and consider cleaning up the head while its out.

I'll do what you suggest. But it's worse than just weeping. I'm using about 4 litres (1 g) every 10-15k. Its a definite spray. We put a pressure gauge on it and it started spraying at 5lbs. Have been using oil, but my rear seal is weeping. I'm at 260k. Getting old.

Given the rear seal is leaking, I'd pull the engine. I always wondered if its easier to pull the head first then pull the block out to do the seals or just pull the engine and work top and bottom on a stand. At 260K (km?) the bottom should be ok and just needs new seals. if you mean 260K miles, I'd say a swap may be in order for something with lower mileage (but I'd still do the seals, clutch etc). If you are running synthetic oil, go back to dino juice and try running 20/50 wt for the time being to slow down the leaks.

If you want to get a few more miles out of your trusty steed you might try some "BG cooling system sealer". Subaru has had some problems with weaping head gaskets and has a product that is very similar to the BG stuff. WE have also had good luck with breaking up a couple of unfilterd Camel's into the coolant.
