Default Air filter under the fuel pump?

I was dicking under the hood today of my 86 4000csq. Was looking for the air filter, and found it under the fuel pump. Seems kind of strange to me. Is the fuel pump hard to remove? Do I have to disconnect any lines?

That's called the fuel distributor. I haven't actually done it myself (getting a K&N soon, so I'll figure it out then) but servicing the filter is pretty common so it should be possible to do without too much drama.

Check <a href="http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/airfilter.htm">Huw's air filter page</a>

Default Not that hard to do

Just pop the clamps, pry up the front of the lid and remove/replace the filter. That's it. Your fuel pump is located near the fuel tank, by the way, along with your 2 fuel filters.

Default To make it easier...

You can cut out excess metal that is above the box. Its easy peasy after that!

The fuel pump is underneath the car under the driver-side back seat passenger. (Start the car and look underneath, you can usually hear it buzzing) Round cylinder with wires attached.

Default Easiest way to change air filter is to remove the passenger side headlamp and do it thru the front..

Remove headlamp, release "clips" surrounding the airbox top, tilt up the lid about 2 inches, and swap the filter..

Default I changed mine after flushing my crankcase breather.. : )

It was a lot easier to change when you had the entire CIS system ripped apart for drying and the intake off. It was still a PITA to get at that side clip..
