My alternator belt has broken twice within the past year. I just replaced it over the summer and now it is sqealing again and it will probably break like the last two times. Has anyone had problem like this. Well, as long as its not the timing belt.

I had a similar problem with my AC. On of the mounts is cracked and pretty much useless. I have to really moose down on the others to keep the compressor from twisting... Also - you may just not bet putting them on tight enough... I've found that I need to put them on a little tighter than the bently says to keep them from squeaking. But you still shouldnt go through them like water

last time I did the belt everthing seemed to be straight and all the mounts were good. I have two theories. There is no splash guard underneath the engine covering the belt. I am not sure if there is supposed to be one there. Since the belt is more exposed to the elements this may be causing my problem. Another crazy brainstorm is the electric fan. The electric fan is constantly coming on. My theory, which I think may be a long shot but I'm am thinking of anything possible, is that the fan coming on all the time is making the alt work harder causing the belt to wear quicker. Or it could just be loose like you said. I'll have to check that out.

Have you changed the adjuster bolt, it may be backing off just enough to loosen the belt and throw it. It's made of pot-metal, wears out after years of use. They are about $6.00 from the dealer.

I have the same thing, especially in this subzero weather with high electrical demand. Whenever the fan comes on at idle (in warmer weather) the belt will squeal, I think the fan is a high-current draw item since it seems to move enough air to power a small hovercraft. However, I plan on taking a look at a.) belt tension and b.) alternator bearings once it warms up just a tad. In the meantime, I have a spare belt in the glovebox "just in case" and am going to start looking at rebuilt alternators in case it needs replacement.
It seems this is pretty common.
