ok so i have this canadian 2.2L 4ks. now as far as i know those never made it state-side. so every time i go a part website they make me pick either the 4000 4cyl. or the 4000Q. should i pick the 4000Q when looking for engine parts and the 4cyl for body and drive train/mechanical? What parts overlap between the quat and not-quat?

The difference with your car is that its a 5cyl automatic, which the 4000 did NOT get here in the states. We did get the Coupe GT, which had the 5cyl with automatic (and manual, of course).
So, choose the 4000 quattro for engine parts![Big Grin](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
As for as transmission stuff goes, you would probably select a Coupe GT.

If your 5 cyl Auto has the JT motor, it's the same motor as the US 4000q.
(Same as Canadian 4kq too)
Your 'hybrid' way of looking for parts should work OK.
I'd think pretty well everything would be as the 4 cylnder car, except for motor spcific bits (Including cooling system, alternator and such).

basically =
either for engine
CGT drivetrain
body panels can be either 4kq or US 4cyl
Any specific parts you need?
Other choice is buy from a Canadian site, but then shipping would be PITA.
Try contacting Kris @ VMautohaus to get parts info, prices & shipping quotes. He's a real nice guy.

ask for Kris

The engine, differential, front axels, engine compartment layout are all the same as the 4kq. the body, rear suspension and transmission are all 4k(non quattro). It'll have a type 87 auto tranny as well.

Auto tranny is larger than the manual in certain areas, so you have to swap over parts off the floor.
But I have heard of folks claiming to do it w/o modding the tunnel. But I personally didn't believe them.

auto-manual swap info thread & 2nd link

Would require a lot of work. The auto is not too bad with the 2.2. no rocket but not terrible. There is a known problem with the seals between the tranny and gearbox allowing fluid to swap so check the transmission fluid every once in a while and make sure it is nice and pink.
